Rachael and Chris Cordrey Enjoy Their Custom Home in Lewes, Delaware

When Rachael and Chris Cordrey first decided to move to historic Lewes, they didn’t have far to go. They both grew up in Delaware, Rachael hailing from Wilmington and Chris from Long Neck.

They had always loved the quaint, historic town of Lewes, regularly visited their restaurants, and spent a lot of time on the Junction Breakwater Trail and at the Cape Henlopen State Park.

“We even got engaged in Lewes on the canal,” said Rachael. “We knew we wanted to be close to these special places when we built our ‘forever home.'”

When they started looking for a custom home builder, they interviewed several builders, but chose to work with Broadpoint because they felt very comfortable with our team.

“As first time buyers, they really listened to what was important to us, answered all of our questions, and made great recommendations,” said Chris. “Having Erin Marshall, Broadpoint’s designer, involved was also a big plus. She was able to help us pick our colors, selections, cosmetic features, and so on.”

The Cordreys also said they had a great experience working with Broadpoint’s design staff, who helped develop their floor plan, and Chris Tull as their project manager.

The home is around 3,500 square feet of living space and Rachael and Chris say the love the Craftsman style front façade (facade) and interior features.

When they began thinking about the design of their home, the Cordreys not only wanted to be able to accommodate guests, but to grow into the house with their own family. So they put the master bedroom on the second floor, and asked for three more bedrooms in the design.

They also wanted an open layout between the kitchen and the two-story family room to make entertaining easier, and to include everyone during large family gatherings. No separating people between the kitchen and family room. And their guests love the openness of the house, and they’ve found the kitchen and dining space to be perfect for entertaining.

Rachael even said the kitchen and its oversized island are their favorite feature of the house. “We have spent a lot of time with family and friends gathered around our island,” she said.

Outside includes a paver patio and fire pit for entertaining during the summer and early fall just as the air starts to get crisp. (“The speakers in the kitchen and back porch have been a huge hit,” said Rachael.) You can also look out the numerous windows during the winter, when it’s cold and snowing, and enjoy the winter scenery while staying warm and cozy inside in front of the fireplace.

The Cordreys' completed custom home.“We made our family room a comfortable space with a large sectional, fireplace, and a TV,” said Chris. “Every night after work we relax and unwind there together. Our fireplace was put to good use with the long winter we had this year.”

When asked for one piece of advice they would share with other custom home buyers, Rachael said, “Take your time! Visit model homes and figure out what you like and don’t like. There are a lot of little decisions to make that you would never think about, such as door handles, faucet fixtures, types of trim work, etc.”

But they also encourage a little restraint to make sure you don’t go over budget. “One lesson we learned is to focus on what’s most important to you in your new home,” said Chris. “It’s easy to get carried away and blow your budget. But, if you know what you care about most, you can focus on spending money in those areas and cut back on the rest.”
